However, recent layoffs, facility closures, and slowing demand have raised questions about whether the once-fast-growing company is facing deeper financial challenges.
History and growth
Founded in Berlin in 2011, HelloFresh quickly expanded across Europe and the United States, capitalizing on consumer demand for convenient meal-kit delivery services. The company went public in 2017 and saw explosive growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, when millions of households turned to home-delivered ingredients and recipes while restaurants were closed.
However, the post-pandemic environment has been far less favorable.
Layoffs and restructuring across operations
In recent years, HelloFresh has carried out several rounds of cost-cutting as the meal-kit market cooled and customer growth slowed.
The company confirmed layoffs affecting workers in multiple locations (over 1600 employees were laid off in the US in recent years, most recently in Texas), including corporate roles and operations staff. In the U.S., HelloFresh also closed several facilities tied to its ready-meal brand Factor as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at reducing expenses.
Industry analysts say the company has been trying to adjust to declining order volumes after the pandemic surge faded. Subscription cancellations and rising marketing costs have also weighed on profitability across the meal-kit sector.
Shifting strategy amid slowing demand
While HelloFresh remains one of the largest players in the category, the company has been shifting strategy to protect margins. Executives have emphasized automation in production facilities, tighter spending and a stronger focus on ready-to-eat meals rather than traditional meal kits.
These moves come as investors increasingly question whether the once-booming meal-kit model can sustain long-term growth in a more competitive grocery landscape.
HelloFresh has not announced plans to file for bankruptcy and continues operating globally. Still, the combination of layoffs, facility changes and slowing demand signals the company is navigating a more uncertain chapter than the rapid growth years that made it a household name.
