I didn’t try my first peanut butter and jelly sandwich until I was 34 years old. I have no idea why because I’ve been a PB&J convert ever since! There is something so comforting about the sweet and salty mix, and it satisfies multiple cravings at one time.
Could the humble PB&J get any better? Turns out it can if you make your own peanut butter! Here is a simple and easy recipe to help elevate America’s favorite sandwich.
What Can Peanut Butter Be Used For?
Aside from PB&J, you can use peanut butter for so many things. I like to spread it on apple slices or celery sticks as a snack, add it to smoothies (banana and peanut butter smoothies are a winner), and also use it as a base for satay dipping sauces! Other cool ideas include using it in oatmeal, pancakes and cookies or even just stirring a spoonful into yoghurt. It’s a great way to add flavour and texture to your meals.
Do I Need Any Special Equipment To Make Peanut Butter At Home?
You need a decent blender or food processor to make nut butters at home. I have a 700-watt food processor, and that works nicely. My lower-powered blender struggles and overheats, and it takes forever for the nuts to blend into a paste. So, a 700-watt minimum blender!

Notes/Tips/Troubleshooting
- The quality of your peanuts matters. If you have rancid peanuts, your peanut butter will taste rancid.
- You can use unroasted and unsalted peanuts and then roast and salt them before blending. Using roasted and salted nuts simply makes the process much faster.
- The nut butter will be hard to spread when stored in the fridge, so it is best to remove it 15 minutes before serving to soften it.
- Your yield may vary. 3 cups of peanuts made me around 1 cup of nut butter, but if you add oil, it might make more, or if your peanuts are packed well into the cup, you might get more.
- Feel free to add fun things like cinnamon, honey, sweeteners, and cacao powder…. You can do plenty of things to jazz up your base nut butter!
