Chipotle is still in growth mode, with plans to open 350 to 370 new restaurants in 2026, but a lively Reddit discussion shows one familiar complaint has not gone away: portion sizes.
In a September 24 Reddit thread that drew more than 1,200 upvotes, one customer said a dispute over chicken and extra steak was the “last straw.” The poster claimed an employee shook meat off the serving spoon and, when asked for more, replied, “That’s all you’re gonna get.” One commenter summed up their own response more bluntly: “I walk away in protest.”

Portion complaints keep surfacing
The frustration is not limited to one post. Another September thread centered on a customer who said they received just six cubes of steak and walked out after being asked whether they wanted to pay for double protein. A July discussion included similar complaints about chicken portions, while an employee-focused thread offered a different perspective: workers said they often feel caught between managers watching portion controls and customers expecting a fuller scoop.
That distinction matters. Reddit posts are anecdotes, not a nationwide audit, and portion experiences can vary dramatically from restaurant to restaurant and even from shift to shift. The complaints are still notable, though, because consistency is a big part of what customers think they are paying for at a build-your-own fast-casual chain.
Not every Chipotle customer feels shortchanged
There is also plenty of pushback against the idea that Chipotle is universally stingy. In a January Reddit thread, one customer said they could make “MEALS” out of a typical burrito bowl and called Chipotle the only restaurant where they still felt they were getting decent portions. Another customer posted in June about a very large sofritas bowl and said, “you can’t beat that,” while encouraging diners to politely ask for more rice, beans or toppings when they want them.
Chipotle’s business results also suggest the online frustration has not translated into a broad customer exodus. For the second quarter of 2026, the company reported comparable restaurant sales up 2.2% year over year, including a 1% increase in transactions. Revenue rose 9.3% to roughly $3.3 billion, helped by new restaurant openings.
The real issue may be consistency
The Reddit debate is less convincing as proof that Chipotle has a companywide portion problem than it is as evidence that customers notice inconsistency quickly. A generous bowl can turn someone into a defender of the chain; a light scoop can turn the same meal into a social-media complaint.
For Chipotle, that makes portion consistency more than a food-cost question. It is part of the value proposition. When customers feel they got what they expected, they tend to talk about the food. When they do not, they talk about the scoop.
