Starbucks has spent the past year trying to win customers back, a turnaround effort that has included store changes, menu simplification and a broader push to make cafés feel welcoming again. We previously looked at why Starbucks was shrinking, but a fresh Reddit debate suggests another issue is now getting under some longtime customers’ skin: price.
In a September 9 Reddit thread with more than 200 upvotes, a customer who said they have ordered mochas since 2010 complained that the price of traditional drinks had increased repeatedly this year. Their blunt question for the company: “Why are you crapping on loyal customers?”

Some regulars say the math is changing
The thread quickly turned into a discussion about whether Starbucks still feels worth the premium. One commenter remembered when competition meant fighting for customer retention, while another questioned how higher prices could make the chain more competitive. The original poster said they had already cut their visits to twice a week and were considering making coffee at home or trying another chain.
Those are individual experiences, not proof that every Starbucks store raised every item by the same amount. Prices can vary by market, and the Reddit conversation itself included customers comparing very different prices at Starbucks and competitors depending on where they lived.
Starbucks is still drawing customers
The other side of the argument is important. Even in the complaint thread, one commenter pointed out that Starbucks still offers perks they value, including refills on certain brewed drinks and small freebies such as water and pup cups. Other customers said nearby alternatives were not necessarily cheaper once drink sizes and add-ons were compared.
More importantly, Starbucks’ latest financial results do not show a broad customer retreat. In its fiscal third quarter, reported July 29, U.S. comparable-store sales rose 7.9% from a year earlier. Comparable U.S. transactions were up 4.2%, while average ticket increased 3.6%.
The value question is getting louder
That does not make the Reddit frustration meaningless. A customer who has bought the same drink for years is especially likely to notice when the total changes, and coffee is one of those habits where small increases can add up quickly over a month.
For Starbucks, the challenge is balancing stronger sales with the perception that a daily ritual is becoming an occasional treat. The company’s traffic numbers say plenty of customers are still coming in. The Reddit thread says at least some of its most loyal regulars are doing the math more carefully than before.
