Iconic steakhouse chain closes longtime Florida restaurant after more than 30 years

Another longtime restaurant has disappeared from Florida’s dining scene as a nationally recognized steakhouse chain closes one of its oldest locations. The move marks the end of an era for a restaurant that had served generations of diners for more than three decades.

Morton’s The Steakhouse permanently closed its West Palm Beach restaurant on May 31, bringing an end to a location that first opened in 1995. The restaurant had been a fixture in the community, serving signature USDA Prime steaks, seafood, and classic steakhouse fare.

A lease decision ends a 30-year run

The West Palm Beach location closed after its lease expired, according to parent company Landry’s Inc. The company said the decision was related to the lease and was not part of a broader announcement about the Morton’s brand.

Landry’s also said employees affected by the closure were offered opportunities to transfer to nearby restaurants within the company’s portfolio where positions were available.

Morton’s continues operating nationwide

While the West Palm Beach restaurant has closed, Morton’s The Steakhouse continues to operate dozens of locations across the United States and internationally. The upscale chain, founded in Chicago in 1978, has long been known for its premium steaks, extensive wine list, and fine-dining atmosphere.

The closure leaves South Florida with fewer Morton’s locations, though the brand continues to serve guests at several other Florida restaurants.

Restaurant industry remains under pressure

The closure comes as restaurants across the country continue to face rising labor costs, higher food prices, increased occupancy expenses, and changing consumer spending habits. Many operators have chosen to close locations when leases expire rather than commit to higher renewal costs.

Although Morton’s remains a prominent name in the upscale steakhouse industry, the closure of its longtime West Palm Beach restaurant highlights the ongoing challenges even established brands face in today’s competitive dining landscape.
