A longtime Bay Area steakhouse known for premium cuts of beef and upscale dining has served its last meal.
LB Steak has permanently closed both of its Northern California locations after parent company Vine Hospitality announced it is shutting down operations. The closure is part of a broader company-wide shutdown that will eliminate approximately 300 jobs, ending more than three decades of business for the restaurant group.
Both LB Steak restaurants have closed
The closures affect LB Steak Santana Row in San Jose and LB Steak Bishop Ranch in San Ramon. Both restaurants ceased operations in June following Vine Hospitality’s decision to close all of its restaurant concepts after determining the business was no longer financially sustainable.
LB Steak opened as one of Vine Hospitality’s upscale dining concepts, offering hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, craft cocktails and an extensive wine list. The restaurants became popular destinations for business dinners, celebrations and special occasions in the Bay Area.
Around 300 employees impacted by company shutdown
While the layoffs span all of Vine Hospitality’s restaurant brands, the company expects approximately 365 employees to lose their jobs as a result of the closures. Reports indicate many workers received little advance notice before the restaurants permanently closed their doors.
The shutdown also leaves longtime customers without one of the company’s signature steakhouse concepts, which had operated alongside its other Bay Area restaurant brands for years.
Rising costs cited as key factor
Vine Hospitality CEO Alistair Levine said the company could no longer continue operating profitably, pointing to rising food and labor costs, a challenging restaurant environment and unsuccessful expansion efforts.
The company confirmed it has no plans to reopen the LB Steak restaurants, bringing an end to the brand’s presence in Northern California after years of serving guests in San Jose and San Ramon.
