One of Houston’s most beloved Mexican restaurants is preparing to serve its final meals at its longtime Upper Kirby location. After more than four decades in business, Picos will close on August 30, marking the end of an era for generations of loyal diners.
While owner Arnaldo Richards says the closure is intended to be a transition rather than a permanent farewell, the restaurant’s current chapter is coming to a close as the search continues for a new home.
A Houston institution since 1984
Picos first opened in 1984 and built a devoted following by showcasing authentic dishes inspired by Mexico’s seven culinary regions. Over the years, the restaurant became known for specialties including its rich mole sauces, handmade tamales, enchiladas, and its signature shaker margaritas, which helped distinguish the restaurant long before craft cocktails became mainstream.
In 2014, Picos relocated to its expansive Kirby Drive location, where it continued serving guests with colorful décor, private dining spaces, and a menu celebrating regional Mexican cuisine.
Why the restaurant is closing
Richards has explained that the property housing the restaurant has been sold for future redevelopment, forcing the business to vacate. Although the family hoped to relocate without interrupting operations, they have not yet secured a new location that meets their needs.
Rather than calling it a permanent closure, Richards has described the move as a transition while the family works to continue the Picos legacy elsewhere in Houston.
Time for one last visit
The restaurant had originally planned to close in 2025 but extended operations after an overwhelming show of community support. Now, with an August 30 closing date confirmed, longtime fans have just a few weeks left to enjoy one final meal at the iconic Houston destination before it begins its next chapter.
