Iowa is set to lose another food production operation as Lund Food Holdings prepares to close its Lake Mills facility, following other recent Midwestern food plant closures. State workforce information shows the shutdown was set to eliminate 23 jobs by October 9, 2026.
The facility is located at 877 North Lake Street in Lake Mills, a small community near the Minnesota border. Public business and local chamber records describe the site as a food product production facility, and the location has a long history of producing prepared and frozen foods.

A longtime food production site is closing
Lund Food Holdings is associated with the Lunds & Byerlys grocery business, whose prepared-food operations have included soups, side dishes, meals and other items sold through its stores. Historical trade reporting shows that the Lake Mills operation was producing frozen soup for Byerlyโs stores as far back as the late 1990s.
Current local business listings continue to identify the Lake Mills property as a food production facility. Iowa Department of Natural Resources records also list Lund Food Holdings at the North Lake Street address, reinforcing that this is an operating food-manufacturing site rather than a retail grocery location.
23 jobs will be eliminated
Iowa Starting Line, citing Iowa Workforce Development WARN information, reports that Lund Food Holdings is closing the Lake Mills operation and laying off 23 workers by October 9. The closure has continued to appear in the stateโs upcoming-layoff information through early October.
A modest job count can still matter locally
Twenty-three positions may be smaller than the hundreds of layoffs announced at some large food factories this year, but a closure can carry a different weight in a community the size of Lake Mills. Manufacturing jobs also support vendors, transportation providers and other businesses beyond the plant itself.
The shutdown ends food production at a site with decades of history in prepared foods.
