An Iowa pizza-and-ice-cream chain known for taco pizza and birthday parties has new owners, four years after going through bankruptcy under its previous owner. Happy Joe’s is the latest restaurant brand undergoing an ownership shakeup, with a group of Quad Cities investors taking over the business.
The acquisition was announced September 30, 2026. The chain’s new leadership says customers should expect menu updates and more attention to consistent food quality, while its signature taco pizza will remain.

New owners, familiar local roots
Carlos Araujo, an executive with the ownership group, has been named president. KWQC reported that he had operated restaurants with the team for more than a year. He described the change as an opportunity to improve the business while keeping its familiar favorites.
The plans include new menu offerings and family meal bundles. Those changes are intended to sit alongside established favorites, rather than replace the chain’s identity as a place for pizza, ice cream and celebrations.
Happy Joe’s also shared the acquisition news on its official website, identifying the buyers as Quad Cities investors.
The bankruptcy happened in 2022
Under its previous owner, Dynamic Restaurant Holdings, Happy Joe’s went through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2022, according to Nation’s Restaurant News. At that time, the company-operated part of the chain had already been shrinking.
The trade publication reported that the business had been dealing with legacy debt tied to its 2017 acquisition. The new owners are now promising investment in the company-operated restaurants and additional support and training for franchise operators.
The acquisition includes the brand’s franchising company and three company-operated restaurants in Bettendorf and Davenport, Iowa. The investor group is taking on both those restaurants and the role of supporting the chain’s franchisees.
A 47-restaurant system with an international presence
At the time of the acquisition report, Happy Joe’s had 47 restaurants: three company-operated locations, 35 U.S. franchised restaurants and nine franchised restaurants in Egypt, according to Nation’s Restaurant News.
The U.S. portion of the system therefore totals 38 restaurants, with the nine Egyptian locations accounting for the rest of its international footprint.
Founder Joe Whitty started Happy Joe’s in 1972. The company’s history emphasizes its combination of pizza and ice cream, with a family-focused atmosphere and birthday celebrations built into the experience.
Today, its menu stretches beyond pizza to sandwiches, pasta and sundaes, while Taco Joe remains one of its signature offerings.
The next test for the new owners will be carrying those familiar elements into the changes they have promised: updated menu choices, family bundles and a more consistent experience from one restaurant to the next.
