How to make keto chocolate mug cake
When I’m making mug cakes I find it easier to add the ingredients to a bowl and whisk them together inside of trying to do it all in a coffee mug.
You literally add eggs, coconut oil, sweetener, cocoa powder, and coconut flour to a bowl and whisk. Then pour it into your greased coffee mug and microwave.
I have also used microwave-safe bowls instead of coffee mugs lots of times to bake my mug cake in the microwave and it works out great each time.
For a quick frosting, you can use whipped cream, some sugar-free jam, peanut butter, almond butter, etc.
Keto Chocolate Mug Cake FAQ
Yes! Instead of a mug, pour the batter into a 12 ounce ramekin, or 2-6 ounce ramekin bowls. Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes.
Yes, you can use a microwave-safe bowl or ramekins instead of a coffee cup to microwave these in. The cooking time might be different so microwave for 2 ½ minutes and then check the batter and then do 30-second intervals.
You can use any frosting you like on a mug cake. I prefer to use frosting that can be made quickly. I suggest using:
– whipped cream (or coconut whipped cream)
– chocolate chips + a dash of coconut oil or butter, melt it and stir
– Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, etc.
– Peanut butter + chocolate chips, melt it and stir
– Softened cream cheese + sweetener + vanilla, combine
– Sweetener + cinnamon, for a cinnamon sugar topping that tastes like a donut
You can easily make this keto mug cake paleo-friendly by using your favorite Paleo sweetener instead of a keto sweetener. Raw honey, maple syrup, coconut palm sugar, or organic cane sugar would all be great options for this recipe.
I did not test an almond flour version. Generally I’d recommend finding an almond flour recipe for mug cake instead of trying to substitute – almond flour can lead to a greasy bake if you don’t properly balance it.

- Prep Time: 2 minutes
- Cook Time: 3 minutes
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 1 cake 1x
- Category: Dessert
- Method: Microwave
- Cuisine: American
- Diet: Gluten Free
Ingredients
- 1 large egg
- 4 tbsp powdered erythritol blend (I used Lakanto)
- 2 tbsp coconut oil, liquid + plus a little for greasing the mug
- 1 ½ tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp coconut flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- Dash of sea salt
Instructions
- First, start by taking a dab of coconut oil or olive oil and coating the inside of a microwave-safe mug.
- In a small bowl, add all of the ingredients.
- Whisk together the batter until combined. It’s ok if the eggs have made some of the coconut oil hard.
- Pour the batter into the coffee mug. Use a spoon to level the batter, so it is smooth.
- Place the unbaked mug cake into the microwave and microwave for 2 ½ minutes. Then check on the mug cake and continue baking in 30-second intervals until baked. It took 3 minutes in my microwave.
- Once baked, eat right away or top with frosting.
Notes
Note: The coffee mug will be hot when finished baking, so I recommend using oven mitts to remove it from the microwave. Since this mug cake has a lot of erythritol I suggest consuming it while the cake is warm. Once it is cool the erythritol crystallizes and makes the texture of the cake feel hard.

Hi Tiffany, are you using net carb counts in the nutrition information of your mug cakes? I notice you do not have fiber count in the nutrition information and coconut flour, as well as cocoa, in this case, definitely have fiber. Thank You

Can this recipe be baked in the oven instead of microwaved? Thanks!

I make this with liquid Stevia, and it works well. I have also started adding 2-3 Tablespoons of plain yogurt to the wet ingredients. For me, this makes the cake more moist.

How many carbs in the chocolate mug cake?

I’m addicted to this mug cake. I have tried different recipes and this one by far is the best. The texture and taste is scrumptious. I use coconut sugar or raw cane sugar. Sometimes I add coconut flakes and choc chips to the batter and cool whip when serving. It’s great plain also. TY!

We don’t use microwave, so can we bake in oven? At what temperature and how long? Thank you!
