Legendary 77-Year-Old California restaurant abruptly closes — rent too darn high

After 77 years of serving the Los Angeles community, Papa Cristo’s, the beloved Greek restaurant and market located in the Pico-Union neighborhood, has closed its doors permanently. Owner Chrys Chrys announced the closure in April 2025 with May 4^th as the last day, citing escalating rent costs as the primary reason for the shutdown.

A Storied Legacy

Founded in 1948 by Sam Chrys as C & K Importing, the business began by bringing food and wine from Greece to Los Angeles. In 1968, his son Chrys Chrys took over and opened a Greek restaurant in addition to the importing business. The restaurant, known for its authentic Greek cuisine and market offering imported goods, became a staple in the community, especially among patrons of the nearby St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

Rising Costs and the Decision to Close

Chrys Chrys explained that the increasing rent made it increasingly difficult to sustain the business. The property housing Papa Cristo’s was listed for sale with a $5.2 million asking price. Chrys expressed frustration, stating, “Tenants are pawns to the landlords,” highlighting the challenges faced by small businesses in the current economic climate.

Community Impact

The closure of Papa Cristo’s marks the end of an era for many Angelenos who frequented the establishment for its hearty Greek dishes and community atmosphere. The restaurant was known for its family-style dinners and served as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Looking Ahead

Despite the closure of the physical location, Chrys Chrys indicated plans to continue the legacy. He ended the farewell announcement with: “The story of Papa Cristo’s doesn’t end here – exciting things are coming.”

So those missing the old Papa Cristo’s flavors at least have that. Take that, high rents!
