Hundreds of Georgia workers are facing the loss of their jobs as a major beverage distributor prepares to shut down its operations in the state. The company’s financial troubles have now reached a critical point, with layoffs expected to begin later this month.
558 jobs are expected to disappear
Republic National Distributing Company, one of the country’s largest wholesale alcohol distributors, is winding down its Georgia operations following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in July.
Four WARN notices filed with the state cover a total of 558 employees. The affected workers are employed by RNDC and several affiliated companies, including Young’s Market Company.
The layoffs are scheduled to begin October 19, with terminations expected to continue over the following two weeks, according to the notices. Affected employees will not have the right to transfer into other RNDC positions.
Two metro Atlanta facilities are affected
The job cuts involve operations in the Atlanta area, including a facility on National Drive SW in Atlanta and RNDC’s location on Wildwood Parkway near Marietta.
The WARN filings classify the closures as permanent. Georgia officials list October 19 as the first separation date for the affected workers.
RNDC previously said it had explored various options to secure financing and prevent the liquidation of its Georgia operations. Ultimately, the company determined that financing was not available to continue operating the facilities.
Bankruptcy continues to reshape the company
The Georgia shutdown is part of a much larger restructuring for RNDC. The company filed for Chapter 11 protection on July 26 after selling operations in several states and pursuing additional asset sales.
RNDC said the bankruptcy process is intended to give the company time to work with potential buyers and wind down remaining operations in an orderly manner.
For Georgia employees, however, the next major date is quickly approaching, with hundreds of positions expected to disappear beginning October 19.
