Wendy’s customers in Florida are finding fewer locations to choose from as a troubled franchise operator begins shutting down restaurants. Four Florida restaurants have already closed as part of a larger shutdown involving Wendy’s locations across several states.
Four Florida restaurants have closed
The closures are tied to Meritage Hospitality Group, a major Wendy’s franchisee that recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Florida locations that have closed include restaurants in Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Orange Park. Two of the closed restaurants were located in Tallahassee, making the city one of the hardest-hit areas in the current shutdown.
The closures are part of a larger effort by the franchisee to reduce its restaurant portfolio while working through bankruptcy proceedings.
More Wendy’s closures are expected
The company has indicated that additional restaurants could close as it moves through the restructuring process. The current agreement allows for at least 30 Wendy’s restaurants to be closed, with additional closures expected through October 16.
Restaurants connected to the franchisee are located across multiple states, including Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, Indiana, and Georgia.
For Florida, the closures represent another setback for a state that has seen numerous restaurant chains reduce their footprints in recent years, as well as some devastating local restaurant closures.
The situation also highlights the financial pressure facing some large franchise operators. While Wendy’s itself continues to operate as a national chain, individual franchisees can face serious financial challenges that result in restaurant closures even when the parent brand remains healthy.
Florida has been hit particularly hard
With four confirmed closures, Florida currently has more locations affected by this particular shutdown than any other state.
The closures don’t mean Wendy’s is leaving Florida. The chain continues to operate numerous restaurants throughout the state, but customers in the affected communities will now have fewer nearby locations.
More closures could follow as Meritage Hospitality Group continues its bankruptcy restructuring and evaluates its remaining Wendy’s restaurants.
