A major food manufacturer is preparing to shut down another U.S. production facility, marking a significant change for a community where the company has operated for decades. The closure will move manufacturing work out of Ohio as the company consolidates production at an existing plant in another state.
Nestlรฉ plans to close its factory in Solon, Ohio, by the end of 2027, transferring production to its facility in Gaffney, South Carolina. The company announced the decision October 19, citing changing customer needs and shifting production volumes.
Production moving to South Carolina
The Solon factory currently produces pouches for Nestlรฉ Professional Solutions, the company’s foodservice business. These products serve commercial customers and include items used in foodservice applications.
Nestlรฉ plans to transfer production gradually over the coming months, with manufacturing at the Ohio facility expected to end by the third quarter of 2027. The factory is then scheduled to close by the end of the year.
The company has not disclosed how many employees will lose their jobs. A formal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, filing is expected around March 2027, which should provide additional information about the workforce impact.
Nestlรฉ said affected employees will receive separation packages and transition assistance. Workers will also be eligible to apply for available positions at other company locations, including facilities elsewhere in Ohio.
Nestlรฉ will maintain other Ohio operations
The closure does not mean Nestlรฉ is leaving Solon entirely. The company’s broader campus, which includes research and development, corporate operations, and other business functions, will remain open.
Nestlรฉ employs nearly 3,000 people across seven facilities in Ohio, according to the company.
The Solon factory closure follows earlier workforce reductions at the site, including 216 manufacturing job cuts announced in 2024.
Nestlรฉ has described the latest move as part of an effort to optimize its manufacturing network and better align production with customer demand. Its Gaffney facility will absorb the work as the company reshapes its U.S. operations.
