Major meat producer announces nearly 1,500 layoffs as longtime Pennsylvania plant prepares to close

Another major food manufacturer is making a significant workforce reduction, adding to a growing list of companies scaling back operations in 2026. This time, the cuts will impact nearly 1,500 workers at a Pennsylvania facility that has been in operation for decades.

JBS USA has announced it will permanently close its beef processing plant in Souderton, Pennsylvania, affecting approximately 1,485 employees. According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, the layoffs are scheduled to begin on August 15, making it one of the largest food industry layoff announcements of the year.

Decades-old beef processing plant will close

JBS said the decision came after a review of its operations and the long-term viability of the Souderton facility. The company noted that the aging plant has become increasingly difficult to modernize and is less efficient than newer processing facilities elsewhere in its network.

The Souderton plant has been a major employer in Montgomery County for many years, processing beef products for customers throughout the region. Its closure will leave hundreds of workers searching for new employment while also affecting local businesses that have relied on the facility.

Support offered to affected employees

JBS said employees impacted by the closure will receive severance benefits and transition assistance. The company also plans to offer eligible workers opportunities to apply for positions at other JBS facilities where openings are available.

JBS USA is one of the largest beef processors in the United States, supplying meat products to grocery stores, restaurants, and foodservice companies nationwide. While the company will continue operating its other U.S. facilities, the Souderton shutdown marks another significant restructuring move in the food manufacturing sector as companies continue responding to rising operating costs, changing market conditions, and shifting consumer demand.
