Intro

McDonald’s is known for burgers and fries, but it also has a huge consumer base for its breakfast menu. Whether you go to McDonald’s for breakfast often or on limited occasions like when traveling, chances are you’ve had one of its most popular breakfast items.

The famous Egg McMuffin

The Egg McMuffin is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The original version was thought up by Herb Peterson, a McDonald’s franchisee. Originally, he was marketing the idea as a to-go version of Eggs Benedict.
The original Egg McMuffin has:
- Egg
- Toasted English Muffin topped with real butter
- Lean Canadian bacon
- Melted American cheese

Other McMuffins

The original Egg McMuffin shouldn’t be confused with other McMuffins on the menu, which vary slightly in the ingredients used.
Sausage McMuffin: Same as Egg McMuffin, but the egg is replaced with a sausage patty.
Sausage McMuffin with egg: This one could also be called Egg McMuffin with sausage because it’s the same thing — the original Egg McMuffin with a sausage patty added. (Did you know that you can make some McDonald’s menu items keto like this one?)
So, how is McDonald’s making McMuffins better?

Limited-time McMuffins

McDonald’s is releasing limited-time versions of the regular McMuffins, starting on July 8th.
We don’t know how long they’ll be on the menu, so if you’re curious to try them, you’d better act sooner rather than later.
Let’s look at the three new McMuffins, which are coming to “participating locations” on July 8th.

If you like a bit of a kick in your food, then these will be for you! The Spicy Egg McMuffin, Spicy Sausage McMuffin, and Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg will launch nationwide, but as mentioned earlier, only in “participating locations.
We don’t know which restaurants won’t offer the spicy McMuffins, so you’ll need to double-check your local restaurant to confirm…but it seems like it’s going to be a pretty widespread release.
Just what makes these McMuffins spicy?

Adding a kick to classics

According to McDonald’s, these McMuffins are topped with Spicy Pepper Sauce to give them their punch.
Did you know that the Spicy Pepper Sauce isn’t new to McDonald’s? It’s already being used on the menu for one specific burger…

Spicy Pepper Sauce

Spicy Pepper Sauce is included in the Spicy McCrispy, but doesn’t appear to be included in any other spicy menu items.
Interestingly, other spicy versions of sandwiches don’t use the sauce. The Spicy McChicken has spice directly in the chicken patty and doesn’t utilize the same sauce that is soon to join the McMuffins.

Spicy Pepper Sauce ingredients

What makes this sauce spicy, anyway? Let’s look at the ingredients.
Spicy Pepper Sauce Ingredients: Soybean Oil, Water, Distilled Vinegar, Egg Yolk, Habanero Pepper, Salt, Sugar, Contains 2% Or Less: Mustard Seed, Garlic, Onion, Xanthan Gum, Red Bell Pepper, Lactic Acid, Propylene Glycol Alginate, Spice, Natural Flavor, Oleoresin Paprika (color), Preservatives (sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate), Paprika, Turmeric, Calcium Disodium Edta (protect Flavor).
Out of the bolded ingredients, the Habanero pepper is where most of the oomph comes from. (Paprika and turmeric aren’t spicy, but they do add some depth, similar to how black pepper tastes.)

Spicy Pepper Sauce and allergens

This might all sound great, but what if you have food allergies?
The only major allergen in the Spicy Pepper Sauce is egg, so you’re good to go as long as you don’t have an egg allergy. (No milk, soy, or other common food allergens are present.)

Why are the Spicy McMuffins temporary?

We don’t know why McDonald’s is only offering the spicy McMuffins for a little while.
The McDonald’s press release states: But don’t snooze too long. Just like your social media stories, the Spicy McMuffin won’t last forever. Set that alarm clock on July 8—because this one’s worth waking up for.
Maybe McDonald’s is testing the spicy versions out to see how they do, and they could bring them back again next summer, or even permanently… but that’s all speculation at this point.
Speaking of which, did you hear about the snack wraps?

Snack wraps are back

After being discontinued for almost ten years, McDonald’s is bringing snack wraps back (permanently!) starting July 10th. There will be Ranch and Spicy versions, and the Spicy will use the same Red Pepper Sauce on the limited-time McMuffins.
It all comes full circle, doesn’t it?
So, that just leaves one big question…

Summary

Are you going to give the Spicy McMuffins a try? Why or why not?
If you like spicier foods, do you hope the Spicy McMuffins will end up being a permanent fixture on the menu?
