Michigan’s manufacturing sector – especially food and beverage – has had an absolutely terrible 2025.
Factories have been closing left and right…
And unfortunately, the pain is already poised to continue into 2026.
And this one’s a pretty big name…
More specifically, Utz Brands (maker of the eponymous chips) has announced plans to shutter its Grand Rapids factory by the end of January 2026, with warehouse operations expected to cease four months later.

The closure reflects a broader pattern of cost pressures in the food-processing industry. Rising raw-material, energy and freight costs have squeezed margins. Younger, more efficient plants are increasingly taking over production while older operations are retired or consolidated.
Underlying all of this are two bigger issues: The shift in American consumer preferences, and the trade war.
Americans have been increasingly turning away from traditional snack foods like salty chips and toward alternatives perceived to be healthier – we’ve seen this play out over the long term, of course – and while that undoubtedly plays a factor, it’s been a very slow drip-drip-drip of demand shift.

The trade war – and the retaliatory tariffs and even boycotts of American goods in foreign markets that it has spawned – has had a much bigger immediate impact. Faced with a sudden, sharp drop in demand, companies are (reasonably, if disappointingly) trying to cut costs wherever they can.
Unfortunately, once this kind of cycle begins, it can be hard to break. Falling demand leads firms to idle machines and release workers. Those layoffs make consumers nervous, encouraging them to save more and spend less. That reduced spending then weakens demand still further, creating pressure for companies to make yet more cuts. It becomes a self-reinforcing slide — and at the end of it, more American workers find themselves out of a job through no fault of their own.
For dozens of hardworking, loyal factory workers in Grand Rapids, this holiday season will be tarnished by the prospect of unemployment in 2026. Let’s join together and wish them well as they embark on their next adventure.
