Minnesota loses yet another factory as unemployment crisis accelerates

Minnesota could really have used some good news.

After a string of factory shutdowns have roiled the state economy…

It would have been nice for Minnesota to get some kind of reprieve.

Unfortunately, more bad news is incoming.

Another food-industry facility in Minnesota is shutting down, dealing a tough blow to workers and yet another sign of pressure on regional manufacturing.

More specifically. Apple Valley Foods recently closed its Chaska, Minnesota pie processing plant, at the cost of 95 good, local manufacturing jobs. 

The decision comes in a climate of rising costs and shrinking margins. Food production firms are being squeezed by higher energy, packaging, and transport expenses. Additional strain from supply disruptions and unpredictable trade policies are also making local plants harder to sustain.

Minnesota and many other states have seen a string of similar closures in recent months. Producers of baked goods, dairy, meat, and packaging are increasingly evaluating whether to close less profitable plants and consolidate operations to newer and more efficient sites.

It all makes sense given the rapid sales decline thanks to the trade war. The combination of retaliatory tariffs and even outright boycotts of American goods in foreign markets has significantly reduced international demand, and companies have responded by trimming production.

Unfortunately, this could set off a troubling chain reaction across the economy. As demand falls, companies reduce their workforce to cut costs. Those layoffs make households more cautious, prompting Americans to spend less out of fear their own jobs might be next. That shrinking consumer spending then forces companies to scale down again to match the lower demand. The end result could be a self-perpetuating spiral into recession – one that could sadly leave even more dedicated workers without jobs or financial stability.
