If you thought 2025 was bad for Missouri…
And it was…with some truly heartbreaking factory closures…
Just wait until you see what’s in store for 2026.
Unfortunately, it could be far worse – because we already have three factories slated to close next year.
One of the closures affects the pizza-crust manufacturing facility in St. Charles, while two pet-food plants in Joplin are also closing after being acquired in 2024. These sites are shutting down as part of a multi-year plan to streamline production and boost supply-chain efficiency.

These plants are all poised to close in 2026, which certainly sets a tone for the new year. Fortunately, workers have plenty of notice of the incoming closures and can begin making plans – but let’s face it, this is certainly going to put a damper on the holiday season.
More broadly, these closures reflect the mounting pressure on food manufacturers to cut costs amid rising inputs, logistics expenses and shifting trade dynamics. Older, less efficient plants – especially those acquired or outside the company’s core footprint – are increasingly vulnerable to consolidation.
Zooming out even further, one of the biggest challenges that many food and beverage companies are facing is the collapse in export demand due to the ongoing trade war. With retaliatory tariffs and even outright boycotts piling up…far too many companies are struggling to make ends meet. It’s no wonder they’re turning to cost-cutting measures – sacrificing jobs to try and stay afloat.
Unfortunately, what begins as a modest slowdown can quickly become a self-fueling decline. Companies reacting to softening demand cut jobs and production to conserve resources. Those decisions unsettle both workers and consumers, causing families to spend less. That further drop in spending pressures firms to cut back again, completing the loop. Each turn of the cycle makes recovery harder, and in the end, it’s ordinary Americans who bear the brunt through lost jobs and shrinking paychecks.
Please join us in wishing these workers well as they embark on their next adventure.
