A longtime California diner that served generations of customers is closing its doors after nearly five decades in business. The family-owned restaurant is becoming the latest longtime eatery to disappear as higher operating costs make it increasingly difficult for independent restaurants to survive.
Heart’s Coffee Shop serves its final meals
Heart’s Coffee Shop in Van Nuys is serving its final customers on August 9, 2026, ending a run that dates back to 1979.
The classic diner, located at 16918 Saticoy St., became known for its vintage atmosphere, heart-shaped roadside sign, and traditional American breakfast and lunch offerings. Generations of Valley residents visited the restaurant over the years, making it a familiar neighborhood fixture.
The restaurant was purchased by Yuk and Sue Wong in 1979. The couple had immigrated to the United States from China a decade earlier and eventually saved enough money to purchase the longtime coffee shop.
Rising costs contributed to the decision
The family says rising food and labor costs, along with staffing shortages, contributed to the difficult decision to close.
Susan Wong-Young, the couple’s daughter, said her parents had been reluctant to significantly raise menu prices because they did not want to put additional financial pressure on longtime customers. Eventually, however, the economics of operating the restaurant became too difficult.
Building will be demolished
Heart’s Coffee Shop is also losing its physical home. A developer has purchased the property and plans to demolish the building as the area undergoes redevelopment.
The family is preserving at least one piece of the restaurant’s history. Its distinctive heart-shaped sign is expected to be preserved at the Valley Relics Museum near Van Nuys Airport.
After nearly five decades, Heart’s Coffee Shop served its final plates on August 9, bringing an end to another chapter in the San Fernando Valley’s classic restaurant scene.
