Hundreds of workers at a longtime Kellogg’s manufacturing facility are preparing to lose their jobs as the company moves ahead with plans to permanently close its Omaha, Nebraska, plant. The shutdown will affect more than 450 employees and marks the end of a major chapter in the city’s food manufacturing history.
Layoffs scheduled this summer
WK Kellogg Co. recently revealed that approximately 451 employees will be laid off as part of the plant closure. According to notices filed with state officials, about 100 workers are expected to lose their jobs between July 6 and July 20, while the remaining employees will be laid off between Aug. 4 and Aug. 18.
The company said affected workers will receive severance benefits and transition assistance.
Closure follows modernization strategy
WK Kellogg first announced plans to close the Omaha facility in August 2024 as part of a broader effort to modernize its manufacturing network. Company leaders cited aging equipment and operational inefficiencies as reasons for the decision.
Production currently handled in Omaha is expected to move to other facilities in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada, where the company has been investing in upgrades and new technology.
The Omaha plant has operated for decades and produces several well-known breakfast cereal brands.
Major impact on local workforce
The loss of more than 450 jobs makes the Kellogg closure one of Nebraska’s largest recent layoffs. Community leaders and employees have expressed concern about the economic impact on workers and their families.
Once operations cease later this summer, the nearly 900,000-square-foot facility is expected to be placed on the market.
