Chili’s has been having a major comeback moment, but not every customer is celebrating.
The casual dining chain has leaned hard into value deals, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and viral menu items, and the strategy appears to be working. Brinker International, Chili’s parent company, reported strong same-store sales growth for the chain, with executives pointing to improved food, service, and value as reasons customers are coming back.
But online, some former Chili’s fans say they are heading in the opposite direction.

Across Reddit threads, customers have complained about menu changes, discontinued favorites, rising prices, inconsistent service, and meals that no longer feel worth the trip. The complaints are anecdotal, not a scientific survey. Plenty of diners still love Chili’s, especially for its 3 For Me value meals, chips and salsa, burgers, margaritas, and Triple Dipper.
Still, the negative comments show how strongly some longtime customers feel when a familiar chain changes the items they used to order.
“Once a week to never again”
One of the strongest complaints came from a Reddit user who titled their post, “I went from going to chilis once a week to never again.”
The user said they used to love several Chili’s staples, including burgers, Chicken Crispers, ribs, and fajitas, but felt disappointed after changes to those items. Their post used the same word over and over again to describe the changes: “Terrible.”
For a restaurant chain built partly on comfort and familiarity, that kind of complaint matters. A customer who goes weekly is not just a casual diner. They are exactly the type of regular most chains want to keep.
Menu changes are a major frustration
Several Chili’s complaints online center on discontinued or altered menu items.
One Reddit user wrote, “I’m basically done with them over the loss of the Original Chicken Crisper,” arguing that the replacement felt too similar to chicken tenders from other restaurants. Another Reddit thread about the Original Chicken Crispers included a commenter who said, “It’s a shame Chili’s won’t listen to its customers.”
Chili’s has updated its Chicken Crispers over the years. Restaurant Dive reported in 2023 that Chili’s rolled out new Chicken Crisper Combos nationwide, describing them as bigger, crispier, and juicier. But for some fans of the older version, “new” has not necessarily meant better.
That is a common risk for chains with nostalgic menu items. When customers have ordered the same thing for years, even a small recipe or format change can feel personal.
Some diners say the value is gone
Other complaints are less about nostalgia and more about price.
In one Reddit discussion titled “What has happened to this place?,” a user argued that Chili’s served “over priced not worth it kinda food” and added, “Their food is not worth what you pay for.”
That sentiment is especially interesting because Chili’s has been promoting itself heavily around value. The chain’s 3 For Me menu starts at $10.99 and has been positioned as an alternative to increasingly expensive fast food. Chili’s has also promoted burgers and chicken sandwiches aimed directly at fast-food competitors.
But value is subjective. A customer who likes the meal may see Chili’s as a bargain. A customer who misses an older menu item, dislikes a recipe change, or has a bad service experience may decide the price is no longer justified.

Chili’s diners also complained about losing smaller or older menu favorites.

Even removing chili bothered some customers

That complaint may sound small, but branding matters. When a restaurant called Chili’s no longer has chili available at some locations or on some menus, it gives disappointed customers an easy punchline.
Chili’s still has plenty of fans
None of this means Chili’s is struggling to attract customers.
In fact, the opposite appears to be true. Chili’s has seen strong sales and traffic growth, helped by value-focused marketing, menu innovation, and renewed interest from younger diners. Some Reddit threads about Chili’s are full of praise, with customers calling the 3 For Me deal one of the best values in casual dining.
The divide shows the challenge of a comeback. Chili’s may be winning over new or returning customers with burgers, deals, and viral menu items. But some longtime fans say they miss the older versions of the restaurant — the old Chicken Crispers, old sandwiches, old sides, old desserts, or simply the way Chili’s used to feel.
For the customers saying they are done, the issue is not that Chili’s has no fans left. It is that the version of Chili’s they loved does not feel like the same place anymore.
