The final chapter appears to have closed for Smokey Bones. The longtime barbecue chain has reportedly shut down all remaining U.S. locations, ending a brand that once operated more than 100 restaurants across the country.
Locations in states including New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Rhode Island reportedly closed on April 28, with several employees telling local media they were informed the same day. Notices posted on restaurant doors confirmed permanent closures.
Sudden end after bankruptcy filing
The closures come just three months after parent companies FAT Brands Inc. and Twin Hospitality Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2026. At the time, company officials said the restructuring was intended to reduce debt while keeping brands operating.Â
However, the latest shutdowns suggest those efforts were not enough to stabilize the Smokey Bones business.
Several media outlets reported the chain’s website now lists all locations as closed, signaling a complete nationwide exit.
Once a major BBQ chain
Smokey Bones launched in 1999 as a casual-dining barbecue sports bar concept. The brand became known for smoked meats, ribs and large-format dining rooms. At its peak, the company operated roughly 120 to 130 restaurants.
In recent years, however, the chain steadily shrank through store closures, ownership changes and conversion plans that would have turned some restaurants into sister concept Twin Peaks locations.
What it means for the restaurant industry
The Smokey Bones shutdown marks another blow to the casual dining sector, where rising labor costs, higher food prices and shifting consumer habits have pressured many chains.
For barbecue fans, it means one more recognizable national brand has disappeared from the dining landscape. Whether the Smokey Bones name returns in another form remains unclear, but for now, the smoke has cleared on a 27-year run.
