Once-popular pizza chain is closing hundreds of restaurants, with California hit the hardest

Pizza Hut’s nationwide downsizing is becoming increasingly visible, and California appears to be among the states feeling the biggest impact. Dozens of restaurants have quietly disappeared across the country as the iconic pizza chain moves forward with plans to shutter hundreds of underperforming locations.

California leads recent Pizza Hut closures

Pizza Hut parent company Yum! Brands announced earlier this year that it plans to close approximately 250 underperforming U.S. restaurants during the first half of 2026 as part of its “Hut Forward” turnaround strategy.

While the company has not released an official list of affected restaurants, research compiled by Fast Company using Pizza Hut’s store locator, Yelp, and Google Reviews identified at least 49 locations that have already closed nationwide. 

California accounts for 14 of those closures—more than any other state—including restaurants in Long Beach, San Diego, Carson, Bellflower, Highland, Stanton, Rowland Heights, Yorba Linda, Fullerton, Inglewood, La Habra, Whittier, Downey, and Rosemead.

Turnaround strategy targets weaker-performing stores

The closures are part of Pizza Hut’s broader effort to improve profitability after years of sluggish U.S. sales and increased competition in the pizza delivery market. Company executives have said the planned closures represent only a small portion of Pizza Hut’s nearly 20,000 restaurants worldwide and are intended to strengthen the brand’s long-term performance.

Despite the restaurant closures, Pizza Hut continues to expand internationally, adding more than 1,100 locations across 65 countries in 2025. More than two-thirds of the chain’s global restaurants now operate outside the United States, with over 99% of all Pizza Hut locations run by franchisees.

For California customers, the recent closures highlight the changing landscape of the restaurant industry as major chains continue to evaluate underperforming locations while investing in stronger markets and modernizing their operations.
