
If you’ve noticed your Panera order cost creeping higher each time, you’re not imagining it.
One of the most glaring examples is something as simple as a bowl of soup. What used to be a reasonably priced comfort option now often costs $7–$9, depending on the type and location. (I ordered two small bowls of soup for pickup on a sick day, and it was almost $20!)
For many customers, that’s more than what a comparable entrée costs at other casual dining spots. What gives with the prices?
Rising costs for ingredients and labor
Panera Bread has marketed itself as a “better-for-you” fast-casual brand, and that image comes with higher ingredient standards. But in recent years, those standards have collided with inflation.
Costs for proteins, produce, and dairy have risen sharply, and Panera’s menu relies heavily on fresh, perishable ingredients. At the same time, labor costs have increased across the restaurant industry. With staffing shortages and higher minimum wages in many states, Panera is paying more for employees—and passing those costs on to customers.
The premium brand positioning
Panera has also been pushing into a more upscale market. Its advertising focuses on “clean” ingredients, artisan breads, and healthier options, which makes it easier for the chain to justify higher prices. The company has also expanded its bakery-café concept into higher-income areas, where customers are more willing to pay a premium for convenience and perceived quality.
Menu engineering and “value” perception
The menu has been redesigned to push more profitable items, like specialty sandwiches and salads, while soups and simple items become relatively more expensive. In many locations, a bowl of soup can be priced nearly the same as a full sandwich, making the soup feel like less of a bargain and more of a luxury.
The bottom line
Panera is still popular, but the rising prices—especially for basic items like soup—are turning casual visits into occasional splurges. As inflation and labor costs remain high, customers may begin to rethink whether Panera is still worth the premium.
