A fast-growing hot chicken chain has become a familiar name across the country, but one of its franchise operators is facing a financial setback. The Pennsylvania-based business behind several Dave’s Hot Chicken restaurants has filed for bankruptcy, putting the spotlight on the risks of expanding a popular restaurant brand.
Franchise operator seeks bankruptcy protection
TIG Reaper, an operator of seven Dave’s Hot Chicken restaurants in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2026 following a dispute with a lender. According to reports, the filing listed assets and liabilities in the $10 million to $50 million range.
Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows eligible businesses to reorganize their finances while continuing operations under court supervision. The process can give struggling operators time to negotiate with creditors and develop a plan to address outstanding debts.
The filing followed a lender lawsuit and raises questions about the financial pressures facing individual franchise owners. The affected restaurants were reported to remain open after the bankruptcy filing.
The case does not mean Dave’s Hot Chicken itself is bankrupt, and there has been no indication that the filing affects the chain’s other franchise operators.
Hot chicken chain continues expanding
Founded in Los Angeles in 2017 by two childhood friends, Dave’s Hot Chicken specializes in Nashville-style hot chicken tenders and sliders, with multiple spice levels and sides including fries and kale slaw.
The brand has expanded rapidly through franchising, building a nationwide presence as demand for chicken-focused fast-casual restaurants has grown. Its expansion has attracted investor interest and helped establish it as a prominent player in the hot chicken market.
However, opening and operating restaurants can require substantial investment in construction, rent, staffing, inventory, and other expenses. Franchisees may encounter financial difficulties even as the larger brand continues to grow.
