Restaurant closures continue to reshape Florida’s dining landscape, with another well-known fast-food chain reducing its footprint across the state. The latest round of shutdowns comes as one of the brand’s largest franchise operators works through a lengthy bankruptcy process.
More Popeyes restaurants close in Florida
Several additional Popeyes restaurants in Florida are permanently closing as Miami-based franchisee Sailormen Inc. continues Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The company, which once operated 136 Popeyes locations across Florida and Georgia, has been selling restaurants and closing underperforming stores as it restructures its business.
Earlier this year, Sailormen shuttered 17 restaurants after filing for bankruptcy. More recently, additional Florida locations were approved for closure after dozens of restaurants failed to attract buyers during bankruptcy auctions, pushing the total number of closures tied to the case to at least 22.
Some locations have been sold to new operators and are expected to remain open, while others will permanently shut their doors. The bankruptcy case remains ongoing.
Financial pressures take their toll
According to court filings, Sailormen cited rising inflation, higher operating costs, declining customer traffic, labor challenges, and approximately $130 million in debt as factors that contributed to its financial difficulties. The company said closing underperforming restaurants would help reduce operating expenses while it reorganizes.
Popeyes’ parent company, Restaurant Brands International, has indicated that the bankruptcy involves an independent franchisee rather than the broader Popeyes brand.
What customers should know
Although numerous Florida restaurants have closed, the majority of Popeyes locations remain open, either under Sailormen or new franchise owners. Still, the closures highlight the financial pressures facing many restaurant operators as they contend with higher costs and increasingly cautious consumer spending.
For customers, the changes mean some familiar neighborhood locations may disappear, even as the Popeyes brand continues operating hundreds of restaurants across the United States.
