A longtime grocery chain is preparing to close two New Jersey stores, giving shoppers in two communities only a few more months to visit the locations. The closures will also affect more than 100 grocery workers as the company continues adjusting its store footprint.
Two Kings stores are closing
Kings Food Markets plans to close its locations in Hillsdale and Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, by January 2, 2027. The Hillsdale store is located at Washington Avenue and Broadway, while the Whitehouse Station location is on U.S. Highway 22 in Readington Township.
The closures were disclosed through New Jersey Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, filings. The Hillsdale closure alone is expected to affect 122 employees.
Albertsons, which owns Kings Food Markets, said the leases for the two stores are ending and will not be renewed.
Workers may have opportunities to transfer
The closures don’t necessarily mean that all affected employeeswill permanently lose their jobs.
Albertsons said it plans to work with employees and unions to determine whether workers can transfer to other Kings locations. Employees who cannot secure another position may be eligible for severance under applicable laws and labor agreements.
The company is expected to provide more information to affected workers as the January closure date approaches.
Kings continues to shrink its footprint
The two closures represent another reduction for Kings Food Markets, which has been operating a smaller New Jersey footprint in recent years. Kings currently has 16 locations in New Jersey, according to recent reporting. The two closures would leave the grocery chain with 14 stores in the state.
Kings previously went through bankruptcy proceedings in 2020 before being acquired by Acme Markets, which is owned by Albertsons.
For shoppers in Hillsdale and Whitehouse Station, the stores are expected to remain open for several more months before permanently closing in early 2027.
