The closure is particularly significant because of the coffee shop’s mission. Bitty & Beau’s was created to provide meaningful employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The company says it now employs more than 450 people with disabilities nationwide.
A different kind of coffee shop
Bitty & Beau’s was founded by Amy and Ben Wright, parents of children with Down syndrome and autism. Their first location opened in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2016, with the goal of creating a workplace where people with disabilities could be valued and included.
The company has since grown to 18 locations across 11 states, according to its website. The Annapolis shop became part of the downtown City Dock community and developed a loyal customer base during its seven years in operation.
Community mourns the closure
News of the closure has prompted an emotional response from employees, families, and customers. Local residents told CBS Baltimore that the shop provided not only coffee but also important employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
