
Culver’s has reached a major milestone, surpassing 1,000 restaurants across the United States as the Wisconsin-based chain continues its steady expansion into new markets.
The company, known for its ButterBurgers and Fresh Frozen Custard, celebrated the achievement after growing from a single restaurant in Sauk City, Wisconsin, to one of the nation’s largest fast-casual chains. The first Culver’s opened on July 18, 1984, and the brand now operates in 26 states. According to the company, it recently crossed the 1,000-location mark, a milestone more than four decades in the making.
From small-town Wisconsin to national chain
Culver’s began as a family-owned restaurant founded by Craig and Lea Culver along with Craig’s parents, George and Ruth Culver. The restaurant quickly developed a loyal following for its ButterBurgers, frozen custard and customer-service-focused culture.
The company expanded gradually through franchising, opening restaurants throughout the Midwest before entering new regions such as Texas, Florida, Arizona and the Southeast. By 2011, the chain had grown to 445 locations. Today, that number has more than doubled, with locations as far west as Idaho.
Growth shows no signs of slowing
The milestone comes as Culver’s continues adding new restaurants. Reports indicate the chain opened more than 50 locations in 2024 and planned dozens more during 2025. The company recently surpassed 1,000 units and has continued growing beyond that mark.
Culver’s now serves customers across much of the Midwest, South and Mountain West, while also pursuing expansion into additional states. Company leaders have pointed to strong franchise partnerships and consistent customer demand as key drivers of growth.
Looking ahead
While reaching 1,000 locations is a significant achievement, Culver’s appears focused on continued expansion. The company recently stated that it is celebrating its first 1,000 restaurants “with many more to come,” suggesting additional growth is on the horizon.
