Massachusetts’ manufacturing retreat has been in full swing all 2025.
With far too many facilities already closing this year…
Unfortunately, there’s more pain on the way.

More specifically, the Comfort Foods Inc. coffee roasting and packaging facility in North Andover is closing.
The North Andover plant, acquired by Coffee Holding in 2017 as part of its expansion into regional coffee roaster operations, handles branded and private-label roasting for major retailers and foodservice clients. The company said the closure will allow production to move to its other facility in Port Chester, New York.
The broader context of this closure mirrors many others in food-industry manufacturing across the region. Rising costs for raw materials, energy, shipping, and packaging have squeezed margins, while consumer demand and retail consolidation have shifted the competitive landscape. Smaller or older facilities have increasingly come under pressure as companies streamline operations.
The trade war has kicked over a broader realignment, too – with international demand falling thanks to boycotts and retaliatory tariffs, domestic food producers are struggling to make up the difference. And ultimately, many are turning to cost-cutting measures – closing facilities, laying off workers.
Sadly, the situation carries the risk of a rolling contraction that builds momentum over time. When demand weakens, production lines slow and workers lose hours or positions. The news of layoffs spreads quickly, eroding consumer confidence and prompting people to delay spending. That collective hesitation depresses demand further, forcing businesses to trim output yet again. Each stage compounds the next, and if left unchecked, the result could be an expanding circle of lost jobs and reduced opportunity for American workers.
Local suppliers, maintenance contractors, transporters and warehouse services that supported the North Andover plant will face disruption once the site shuts. The loss of a regional manufacturing hub tends to ripple through nearby economies, having an outsized impact beyond the facility itself.
And just in time for the holidays, too.
