A popular upscale restaurant has quietly shut its doors at a Maryland shopping center, leaving dozens of workers affected and diners with one fewer option for steaks and seafood. The closure comes amid continued turnover among restaurants at the shopping destination, where several businesses have departed in recent years.
J. Alexander’s closes Annapolis location
J. Alexander’s has permanently closed its restaurant at Annapolis Town Center, located at 1906 Towne Centre Boulevard in Annapolis, Maryland, according to local reporting by Eye On Annapolis.
The closure affects 45 workers, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing submitted by J. Alexander’s Restaurant, LLC. The notice was filed October 23, with layoffs scheduled to take effect October 26, 2026.
The restaurant’s apparent closure was reflected in its online listings, which identified the location as permanently closed. The Annapolis restaurant also disappeared from the chain’s corporate location directory, although its individual webpage remained accessible.
J. Alexander’s was known for its upscale American menu featuring wood-fired steaks, seafood, salads, and made-from-scratch desserts.
Restaurant’s closure follows earlier fire
The restaurant opened at Annapolis Town Center on October 2, 2023, replacing Gordon Biersch, another restaurant operated by the same parent company.
Its closure follows an exhaust-system fire reported on September 25. However, the restaurant reopened shortly after the incident and continued operating for several weeks before its eventual shutdown, according to local coverage.
No official explanation for the closure had been publicly identified in the available reporting as of October 28. It also remains unclear what will happen to the restaurant’s former space.
Another change at Annapolis Town Center
J. Alexander’s departure adds to a series of restaurant and retail changes at Annapolis Town Center. Other businesses have also left the shopping destination as its ownership and tenant mix have evolved.
The closure removes the chain’s only Baltimore-area location, although J. Alexander’s continues to operate restaurants elsewhere in the United States.
For affected employees, the shutdown means the loss of their positions, while the future use of the former restaurant space remains uncertain.
