Another Kroger grocery store is preparing to close its doors as the supermarket giant continues a broader effort to eliminate underperforming locations across the country. The latest closure comes just weeks after the company confirmed plans to reduce its store count over the next 18 months.
Michigan store to close in September
Kroger has announced that its Flint Township, Michigan, store at 5249 Corunna Road will permanently close on September 30. The location is one of approximately 60 stores the company plans to shutter nationwide as part of an initiative to improve efficiency and strengthen long-term profitability.
According to Kroger, employees at the Flint Township store will be offered opportunities to transfer to nearby locations, helping minimize the impact on its workforce. The company has not indicated that additional Michigan stores will close as part of the current plan.
Company continues to streamline operations
The closure follows Kroger’s announcement during its first-quarter earnings report that it expects to close roughly 60 underperforming stores over an 18-month period. Company executives said the decision will allow Kroger to reinvest in higher-performing stores, enhance the customer experience, and support future growth.
Despite the planned closures, Kroger has emphasized that the vast majority of its more than 2,700 supermarkets will remain open as the company continues investing in store remodels, digital services, and e-commerce capabilities.
