Intro

Domino’s is, I think without a doubt THE powerhouse pizza chain in the USA.
I’m not saying it’s the best pizza, but I think it’s hard to argue that it’s not the most popular.
Of course, the path to its current dominance has been long and winding…
And full of old recipes that didn’t stand the test of time.

Intro (continued)

Some of those losses are…pretty tough to take!
Because Domino’s has done some really cool stuff with flavors over the years, and sadly not all of its awesome recipes are still with us today.
Here are seven discontinued recipes I’m confident we’ll never see again…
And the first one is kind of a fun twist on an old classic:

Calzone pockets

I’ve always been a sucker for calzones and strombolis, and Domino’s calzone pockets were a super cool execution on that classic. (And exclusive to India.)
Basically, Domino’s took your typical calzone – dough with toppings stuffed in it – and added a couple twists.
First off, there was a layer of cheese all around the inside of the dough in addition to stuffed in with the toppings, so you got a really cheesy and satisfying bite.
Plus, they also put paneer in with the toppings, which is legitimately one of my favorite cheeses ever.

Oreo dessert pizza

Although I give CiCi’s most of the credit for really popularizing dessert pizza…
I’ve gotta say that Domino’s Oreo dessert pizza was maybe the most audacious version of it that I’d seen.
Unfortunately, the execution was just not all that great. The crust was supposed to be chocolate but didn’t have much flavor at all. And while the Oreo cookie topping tasted like, you know, Oreos, the white creme sauce was just pretty nasty.
All in all, a disappointment! I’m not missing this one, but I hope Domino’s brings a better version back someday.

Chicken kickers

Chicken kickers were Domino’s version of chicken nuggets, and they were excellent.
(And honestly, with the whole boneless wing craze today, maybe they were just a little early for their time).
They had a unique flavor thanks to the herbs and spices Domino’s used…so while there are still boneless chicken wings at Domino’s today, they’re just not the same.
Bring them back!

Double decadence pizza

This was something offered exclusively in the UK, which is a shame, because I had the chance to try it when I was visiting in 2017, and it was delightful.
Essentially, Domino’s had a typical pizza…and then under it, another layer of crust…and in between the two crusts, they had a cheese and herb sauce layer.
Excellent. Unfortunately, it was discontinued in 2018, and after a brief comeback in 2021, crickets.

Breakfast pizza

Breakfast pizza is one of my personal favorite indulgences – I’ve got a lot of fond memories of eating even the comparatively terrible, frozen ones as a kid.
But Domino’s breakfast pizza? Whole different level. With bacon and sausage and cheese and egg…just perfection.
(Also the sweet version was pretty good if I remember correctly – blueberries, apples, cream cheese, and streusel topping. Like all your favorite sweet breakfast dishes put together.)
While popular, it was ultimately discontinued because people only wanted it for breakfast. (And let’s face it – cold pizza for breakfast is also perfectly acceptable.)

Baked apple oven dip

What is it with Domino’s and desserts?
Few (if any) of them ever seem to stick!
The baked apple oven dip was delightful – cinnamon bread twists on the side, and then a baked apple dip in a pie dish – but didn’t stand the test of time. After less than a year on the menu (Fall 2021 to Summer 2022), it went the way of the dinosaur, and there have been no announced plans to ever bring it back.
But at least the cinnamon bread twists remain! This time paired with a cream cheese dip.

Pasta bread bowls

There was a time not that long ago (up until about 2021) that, if you ordered pasta from Domino’s, it came in an edible bread bowl.
Which, uh, yum!
Basically you were getting your carbs with a side of carbs, please and thank you.
Today’s pasta bowls are excellent, don’t get me wrong (highly recommend the spicy buffalo mac & cheese), but the best way to take the edge off was to rip some bread off the bowl and dip it in the pasta.
Here’s hoping they come back sometime soon!
