Intro

A handful of well-known foods stand the test of time.
I’m talking about dishes like…Big Mac. Baconator. Whopper.
For everything else, it’s a constant push-pull between the need to give fans what they want…and attract new fans with new and fun flavors.
Get the mix wrong, and you’ll lose customers.
But have too many dishes, and you’ll make it too complext to operate the restaurant!

Intro (continued…)

That’s one of the reasons why discontinued dishes relatively rarely ever come back to the menu (and even if they do, it’s usually only for a limited time).
But of course – there are lots of amazing dishes that unfortunately get pushed aside along the way.
Here are nine from Wendy’s that I find myself missing most:

Chicken cordon bleu sandwich

The dish: Straightforward and delicious – breaded chicken, ham, and Swiss cheese, plus mayo and dijon mustard, all on a Kaiser roll.
The story: I’ve always been a sucker for chicken cordon bleu sandwiches (remember the Arby’s classic?), and Wendy’s was no exception. And not only was it a great sandwich, it was created by none other than Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas himself at the request of his daughter.
Sadly, after its introduction in 1991, the sandwich had a rocky rollout and didn’t last past 1992. We’ve gone thirty-three years without!

Big bacon cheddar cheeseburger

The dish: In addition to the burger patty itself, it had applewood smoked bacon and bacon sauce, plus American cheese, a cheddar cheese spread, and crispy onions – all loaded on a toasted cheddar bun.
The story: This was, like, maximum bacon and maximum cheddar. You got a lot of both throughout every bite, and I’m so frustrated it’s gone. Truly this was one of Wendy’s best burgers – but sadly it only lasted about a year (Fall 2021 – Fall 2022) before being discontinued, likely forever.

Hot honey chicken sandwich

The dish: Typical fried chicken sandwich – chicken breast, pickles, and bun – plus a habanero-infused hot honey sauce. Absolutely delicious.
The story: Sweet + spicy is usually a winning combination; I genuinely don’t know why this one didn’t work out for Wendy’s. It was launched in Feburary 2022 – right as everyone was getting excited about hot honey, so it was perfectly on time – but didn’t even make it to the end of the year. It’s a mystery…

Country fried steak sandwich

The dish: Fried steak patty, lettuce, and mayo on a normal bun.
The story: This was a cool, Southern-inspired addition to the Wendy’s menu in the early 1990s, and in fact it was on the 99-cent Super Value Menu for a while there. Country fried steak with mayonnaise is always a winner in my book. (And even better if you can just bite into it on a sandwich!) It was ultimately retired in 1994, and we haven’t heard from it since.

Bacon portabella mushroom melt

The dish: Burger and bun, sauteed portabella mushrooms, bacon, and a cheddar cheese sauce (not slices).
The story: If you’ve had portabella mushrooms before, you know that they bring a rich earthiness to any dish…combine that with the bacon and the cheddar cheese sauce, and this was an excellent burger. It was only available for a limited time as part of Wendy’s “Made to Crave” lineup in 2012, so unfortunately it’s lost to us…probably forever.

Wild mountain chicken sandwich

The dish: Spicy chicken, bacon, colby-jack cheese, and a “zesty” Southwestern sauce.
The story: This was a great sandwich – classic spicy “Southwestern” flavors with a bit of a smoky kick from the bacon. So emblematic of Wendy’s hard work trying out new flavor combos and seeing what works. Unfortunately, this one didn’t make the longer-term roster – it was introduced in 2004 and retired soon after.

Pretzel bacon cheeseburger

The dish: Pretzel bun, honey mustard, beer cheese sauce, Muenster cheese, bacon, and (of course) a beef patty. Just an iconic combination.
The story: Remember when everyone was doing pretzel buns? I do. It was 2013, and they were a huge trend – and honestly, I don’t know why they disappeared. This was a really great burger, and it’s still remarkably popular with the Wnedy’s fandom despite having been off-menu for more than a decade at this point.
Bring it back!

4-Alarm spicy chicken sandwich

The dish: All the spice – spicy chicken breast, pepper jack cheese, jalapenos, 4-alarm chipotle sauce, and lettuce – all on a ciabatta bun (to cut the heat a little). This was a VERY spicy sandwich.
The story: This was released in 2006 as a limited-time item, and it’s still got a lot of credibility with spice enthusiasts. Which tells you exactly why it didn’t make it long term (and will probably never come back)…it was just too spicy for the average person!

Dave’s deluxe

The dish: Standard burger – beef, bun, lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup – with mayo, sauteed onions, and three stips of bacon added to take it up a notch.
The story: This was introduced in the early 1990s and was on the menu for several years before being retired, and you can see why – it was a big burger that offered a lot of value and a hefty meal! As you can guess from the name, it was named after Dave Thomas and served as kind of Wendy’s “flagship burger” while it was on the market – directly competing with McDonald’s favorites like the Arch Deluxe.

Summary

So there you have it – nine awesome, sadly discontinued Wendy’s dishes that will probably never again see the light of day.
And it’s a real shame, because each of them had an awesome story to tell – not to mention tons of delicious, fresh ingredients.
Gone, but not forgotten.
Which brings me to my big question:
