Intro

To know Buc-ee’s is to love Buc-ee’s.
It’s got just about everything you could possibly imagine.
(No wonder – unlike most convenience stores, which are 2,000-4,000 square feet – the typical Buc-ee’s is 50,000+ square feet!)
Including what is – let’s face it – some pretty great BBQ.
But here’s the thing…

The only problem is…

While Buc-ee’s bbq is certainly quite tasty, there are plenty of die-hard bbq lovers who’ll tell you that their favorite chain actually has much better food.
Here are seven bbq joints giving Buc-ee’s a run for its money:

Mission BBQ

Where you’ll find them: 20 states, with the highest concentrations in Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.
What makes them better: Flexibility. They’ve got great sandwiches and platters, and many offer NC style or traditional bbq options. They also have 10 different sauces to choose from.

Rudy’s Real Texas Bar-B-Q

Where you’ll find them: Texas, obviously – but also Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.
What makes them better: Delicious house blend rub, unique bbq taste because they use oak instead of mesquite wood for their smoking. Try their spicy chop if you want a little extra zing. (Also, their jumbo smoked potato with meat is totally amazing.)

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

Where you’ll find them: Dickey’s is in 41 states, with heavy concentrations in Texas, California, and Colorado.
What makes them better: Their selection is fantastic, there’s genuinely something there for everyone. My recommendation? Their pork ribs are amazing. Try the jalapeno cheddar keilbasa for a different taste.

Famous Dave’s

Where you’ll find them: 30 states, as well as outposts in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Winnipeg.
What makes them better: Experimentation. Famous Dave’s bbq is obviously quite good, but I appreciate how much they’ve branched out and found unique ways to combine flavors with different foods. Their Korean sweet heat section – which includes chicken strips, a baby back ribs platter, smoked brisket egg rolls, and chicken wings – is just such a perfect example. If you’re looking for new takes on the old favorites, Famous Dave’s is where it’s at.

Moe’s Original Bar B Que

Where you’ll find them: 13 states, with half of locations in Alabama. They’ve even got two in Maine!
What makes them better: Moe’s specializes in Alabama-style bbq, with an amazing white sauce you can slather on any meat to make it amazing.
Also – take it from me – try their fried pickles. I’m not really a pickle guy, but they’ve converted me!

Red Hot & Blue

Where you’ll find them: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas. They have just five locations among those four states, so you’ll have to look hard!
What makes them better: All their bbq is great, but I’ve got a special place in my heart for their caramelized burnt ends and their catfish fingers. (Which come with a side of hushpuppies.) Oh, also give their fried okra a try – just like grandma used to make!

4 Rivers Smokehouse

Where you’ll find them: Exclusively in Florida (at least, for now) – 4 Rivers has 15 locations spanning the whole state.
What makes them better: Their tri-tip sandwich is genuinely the best bbq sandwich I’ve ever had. You’ll also love their generous portion sizes (especially the 4R Party Package).

Buc-ee’s

Ok, I couldn’t leave without giving Buc-ee’s its due. After all, their chopped brisket sandwich is amazing!
Where you’ll find them: In nine states, with more on the way. The majority of Buc-ee’s are still in Texas…for now!
What makes them better: Like I said, the chopped brisket sandwich is great. Honestly, I’m a big fan of pairing it with their pecan pralines. Try their sausage on a stick for a fun treat, too.
