Intro

Is there anything better than fresh-baked Christmas cookies?
I’m a huge fan of the traditional Christmas cookie exchange, so that we can all get all the favorites!
To help us all remember the key players, here are the top 10 Christmas cookies of all time.
Making the list required two things: 1) Has to be “Christmas-y” (Sorry, chocolate chip cookies!) 2) Has to be super-missed by people if we didn’t have them.
Let’s see the cookies!

#10 Classic Shortbread

Christmas-y? A traditional Scottish Christmas cookie, so pretty Christmas-y!
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? While few would turn down a shortbread cookie, you could probably get away with excluding it from your holiday cookie platter.
At least versus the nine cookies that rank higher…

#9 Peppermint Fudge

Christmas-y? Candy canes? Yes!
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? You kind of need a fudge or brownie and you need some peppermint representation.

#8 Snickerdoodles

Christmas-y? Fairly Christmas-y but arguable that this is a “year-round” cookie.
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? For some of us, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but the snickerdoodle stans are out there!
You can make these really well keto, too!

#7 Cornflake Christmas Wreaths

Christmas-y? It’s green and red and shaped like a wreath! What more can we do here?!?!
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? I’m not sure many would specifically ask for this cookie, but when we see it in a platter, we’re glad it’s there and we definitely think Christmas!

#6 Gingersnaps

Christmas-y? Ginger is a Christmas staple!
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? OK, it has a ginger-based sibling that’s further up this list, so you COULD get away skipping this one unless you love the crunch.

#5 Mexican Wedding Cookies

Christmas-y? Yes! And very distinctive as part of a platter.
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? You might not be able to put your finger on what’s missing, but it would be like not getting a powdered donuts in a dozen.
Note: Also called a Mexican wedding cake, a Russian tea cake, a butterball, or a snowball.

#4 Thumbprint Cookies

Christmas-y? At least in my house growing up, this was the top holiday cookie. My mom would make it with rolled walnuts.
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? I mean, I would, and I think others would too! Around the world, Swedish people call them Hallongrotta and Australians call them jam drops.
There are lots of variants: Butter and jam, peanut butter and jelly, and the nutty one at my house.

#3 Gingerbread Cookies

Christmas-y? Super duper Christmas-y!
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? Absolutely. Do not let that gingerbread man run away!

#2 Hershey’s Kiss Cookies

Christmas-y? Yes, but also very welcome year-round.
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? You may call them peanut butter blossoms, but whatever you call them, anyone without a peanut allergy would miss them (and for that, just use a sugar cookie recipe vs. a peanut butter cookie recipe).

#1 Sugar Cookies

Christmas-y? Yes, the most iconic Christmas cookie, particularly the Christmas Tree-shaped one! The Starbucks Snowman ain’t bad, either.
Would people miss it if they weren’t there? Most of us probably prefer a cookie up the list to a basic sugar cookie, but THIS is the one we make with our kids.
