Mmm…dessert!
A perfectly glazed donut, a crispy-on-the-outside-but-soft-in-the-middle chocolate chip cookie, or a triple scoop of ice cream because you can’t decide.
What could be better?

Intro (Continued)

We got the data for this dessert list from YouGov’s surveys of the American people.
We used their measures of fame (whether you know the brand) and popularity (whether you like the brand) to calculate what percentage of people who know a dessert place like or love the place.
Here are the top 10, starting with a famous donut shop that didn’t make the list…

Bonus: #11 Dunkin’

Percent of people who know it that love it: 70%
You know this top 10 has fierce competition when a 70% approval rating doesn’t get you in the door!
Dunkin’s solid, but two other donut shops rank higher, including our next one…

#10 Winchell’s Donuts

Percent of people who know it that love it: 70%
You have to love a donut shop that gives you a baker’s dozen (13), but Winchell’s goes one better with 14 donuts in a dozen!
If you’re unfamiliar with Winchell’s (“Home of the Warm ‘n Fresh Donut”), you must not be a West Coaster. This California chain has over 170 stores in six Western states.

#9 Auntie Anne’s

Percent of people who know it that love it: 70%
Auntie Anne’s buttery pretzels are so darn good.
If you’re like me, the smell transports you to the very best mall experiences!
A lemonade to wash it down? Yes, please!

#8 Carvel

Percent of people who know it that love it: 70%
Best known for the ice cream cakes at kids’ birthday parties, Carvel clearly has a soft spot in many of our hearts.
But the store experience with your choice of soft serve or scooped ice cream, sundaes, and shakes in addition to Fudgie the Whale and all your cake favorites is underrated!

#7 Cinnabon

Percent of people who know it that love it: 70%
Cinnabon is the king of cinnamon rolls and #7 on our list.
If you haven’t been in a while, check out the Cookie Bonbites. It’s the deliciousness of a cinnamon roll baked inside a chocolate chip cookie!
And like everyone else these days, they do have cold brew iced coffee to pair with your pastry.

#6 Cold Stone Creamery

Percent of people who know it that love it: 70%
Born in Arizona, this ice cream parlor is nearing 1,000 stores in the U.S.
As the name implies, the gimmick here is that they mix your ice cream and toppings together on a slab of frozen granite (get it, “cold stone”?).
Pretty delicious, and super fun for kids!

#5 Friendly’s Ice Cream

Percent of people who know it that love it: 71%
This diner still has about many dozens of stores left. And like two other names further up this list, even though it has savory foods, it’s most famous for its ice cream.
You’ll find Friendly’s along the East Coast, with 23 in its home state of Massachusetts.
The Fries n’ Ice Cream Dipper is genius (take that, Wendy’s Frosty!) and the Retro Royal Banana Split is hard to turn down!

#4 Fosters Freeze

Percent of people who know it that love it: 71%
Fosters Freeze has over 60 locations, but you’ll have to travel to California to try it.
This blast from the past has been around since 1946. It’s added food to its menu, but it’s the soft serve that keeps people coming back.
Think of it as the California Dairy Queen, complete with its Twister (think a DQ Blizzard).

#3 Krispy Kreme

Percent of people who know it that love it: 71%
How did Krispy Kreme not top this list?!?!?
It’s the highest-ranking donut, at least. As it should be because no other donut melts in your mouth quite like a warm, fresh Krispy Kreme will.
Bonus points for just the right amount of glazing.

#2 Baskin-Robbins

Percent of people who know it that love it: 72%
Baskin-Robbins makes it to #2 on our list.
While there are many fancier ice cream scoop shops out there, so many of Baskin’s “31 Flavors” are iconic.
Think flavors like Cherries Jubilee, Pralines ‘n Cream, Jamoca, and World Class Chocolate.

#1 Dairy Queen

Percent of people who know it that love it: 78%
Are you surprised?
Clearly, America loves Dairy Queen’s soft serve ice cream, whether it’s in the form of a cone, a sundae, a Dilly Bar, a banana split, or a Peanut Buster Parfait.
And, of course, the Blizzards, where you can mix in whatever you desire, from Oreos to M&M’s to Butterfingers to fudge to cheesecake bites.
Long live the Queen..
