Intro

We all know America loves food — big, hearty, comforting dishes that just make you feel good.
When you think “America’s favorite food,” a few classics probably pop into your mind: Golden, crispy fried chicken? Maybe a cheeseburger loaded with toppings and a side of fries?
Well, a new customer survey from Q1 2025 just came out, and honestly, the results surprised me!
Spoiler: hamburgers and fried chicken did rank high…but neither took the top spot.
Let’s take a look at the top ten — did your favorites make the list?

#10: Apple Pie

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 97%
Percent of Americans who like it: 79%
My take: They don’t call it “as American as apple pie” for nothing. Sweet, a little tart, buttery crust — it hits so many comfort food notes at once. Is there anything better than a warm slice of apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top? Honestly, I’m a little surprised it didn’t rank higher!

#9: Corn on the Cob

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 98%
Percent of Americans who like it: 80%
My take: This one surprised me at first, but then I thought about it, and yeah… corn on the cob is really good. Nothing says summer like corn on the cob, right? My aunt and uncle are farmers, and every year they’d give us fresh corn straight from the field. Slathered in butter and sprinkled with salt? Absolute perfection. I’m guessing corn on the cob is nostalgic for a lot of folks, and that simple, sweet and salty flavor explain why people love it so much.

#8: Steak and Fries

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 98%
Percent of Americans who like it: 80%
My take: A classic combo. A juicy steak paired with crispy fries hits all the cravings — salty, savory, super satisfying. Honestly, if this had ranked even higher (like top 5), I wouldn’t have been shocked — but apparently, some of us prefer our potatoes solo (more on that soon)…

#7: Hash Browns

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 98%
Percent of Americans who like it: 81%
My take: Breakfast is my favorite meal, and a solid breakfast isn’t complete without hash browns. They’re one of those foods you don’t realize you crave… until they hit your plate. Or you see someone else eating them, and suddenly you NEED hash browns. Seeing them ranked ahead of steak is actually kind of hilarious — but fair.
The real question though… shredded, patties, or country-style hash browns?

#6: Cheeseburger

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 99%
Percent of Americans who like it: 82%
My take: Only #6?! I would’ve bet good money that cheeseburgers would rank higher. Maybe people are starting to get a little tired of them? My husband would probably eat a cheeseburger for every meal, but they’re not always my first choice. Still, when it’s done right, a classic cheeseburger is hard to beat.

#5: Grilled Cheese

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 98%
Percent of Americans who like it: 83%
My take: Grilled cheese is one of my favorite foods. Simple, sure — but that’s its magic. Crunchy bread, gooey cheese, and a side of tomato soup? The ultimate comfort food. It’s nostalgic and absolutely delicious, no matter how fancy (or not) you make it.

#4: Fried Chicken

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 98%
Percent of Americans who like it: 83%
My take: Golden, crispy, juicy — fried chicken hits the spot (and paired with a good dipping sauce or a drizzle of hot honey… perfection.) I honestly thought it would be Top 3, but here we are…

#3: Hamburgers

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 98%
Percent of Americans who like it: 83%
My take: The humble hamburger outranked the cheeseburger — and honestly, I didn’t see that coming. Who’s out here skipping the cheese? Maybe people lump hamburgers and cheeseburgers together. Either way, there’s no denying the burger’s iconic status. A smash burger (with cheese) is my personal favorite.

#2: Mashed Potatoes

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 98%
Percent of Americans who like it: 84%
My take: Honestly, who doesn’t like mashed potatoes? Fluffy, buttery, and pure comfort. Mashed potatoes are a side dish, sure, but clearly America loves them enough to almost make them #1 (it was very close!).

#1: French Fries

Percent of Americans who have heard of it: 99%
Percent of Americans who like it: 85%
My take: I totally get why french fries took the #1 spot. They’re everywhere, they go with everything, and everyone has a favorite version (waffle fries, curly fries, shoestring, thick cut…). They’re addictive, comforting, and just iconic.

Summary

And there you have it – America’s top 10 favorite foods, according to the latest data. But honestly, can we talk about how it’s a crime that pizza didn’t even make the list? That’s just wrong.
One thing is clear though: Americans love their potatoes. From fries to mashed, they’re taking over this list!
