California just can’t seem to stop the flow of bad news right now.
From longtime factories in the state closing…
To In-N-Out’s CEO announcing that she’s abandoning the state in favor of Tennessee…
The Golden State just can’t catch a break!
And now it’s come out that even Starbucks is cutting stores now.

Some of the losses are because of Starbucks’ plan to shut down or convert its “Pick Up” stores that were focused on quick mobile orders.
But more broadly, the losses reflect both Starbucks’ and California’s struggles so far in 2025. Starbucks has seen sales dip as consumer preferences continue to shift, all while inflation and tariffs spike coffee prices.
California is of course facing disruptions from employers closing and ICE raids that have taken a substantial toll. Not surprisingly, that’s meant reduced spending on things like Starbucks.
And so, Starbucks is closing or has recently closed a number of stores in California. Here’s a partial list:
- Shattuck Ave, Berkeley
- Jackson Street, San Francisco
- West Santa Clara Street, San Jose
- Half Moon Bay
- Gilroy
