Bahama Breeze says goodbye to Florida
Perhaps the biggest restaurant exit of the year belongs to Bahama Breeze. In February, parent company Darden Restaurants announced it would permanently close 14 locations and convert the remaining 14 into other Darden concepts, effectively ending the Caribbean-themed chain.
The move was especially significant because Bahama Breeze was founded in Orlando in 1996, and Florida had long been its largest market. Darden said the brand was “no longer a strategic priority” after exploring alternatives for its future.
Smokey Bones shutters all restaurants
Another major departure came from Smokey Bones. The barbecue chain, which once operated dozens of restaurants across the country, ceased operations entirely earlier this year.
The closure marked the end of a brand that had maintained a strong presence in Florida for years and left longtime customers searching for alternatives. Industry observers cited ongoing financial challenges and changing consumer preferences as factors behind the chain’s demise.
TGI Fridays continues its Florida retreat
TGI Fridays has also continued shrinking its Florida footprint following its bankruptcy restructuring. Several Florida restaurants have closed as the company works to streamline operations and focus on its strongest-performing locations. While the iconic casual dining chain still operates in some markets, its reduced presence reflects the broader struggles facing full-service restaurant brands in recent years.
Florida remains one of the nation’s busiest restaurant markets, but 2026 has demonstrated that even recognizable brands are not immune to economic pressures. As companies focus on profitability, more chains are choosing to operate fewer locations rather than maintain expansive footprints—a trend that could continue throughout the year.
