Taco Bell is seeing a sharp decline in customer visits following a multistate cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce, raising questions about how long the fallout could last. A steep but familiar decline

The drop is significant, but history suggests major restaurant chains can recover from even severe food safety crises.

Chipotle experienced one of the industry’s most damaging outbreaks in 2015, when E. coli, norovirus, and salmonella incidents sickened hundreds of customers across multiple states. The company’s same-store sales fell roughly 30% in the first quarter of 2016, and customer traffic remained weak for months as the chain invested heavily in new food safety protocols and marketing campaigns before eventually returning to growth. 

Jack in the Box faced an even more devastating crisis in 1993, when an E. coli outbreak linked to undercooked hamburgers killed four children and sickened more than 700 people. Sales plunged in the aftermath, but the chain rebuilt its reputation by implementing food safety standards that exceeded industry requirements, becoming a model for the restaurant industry. 

Analysts expect Taco Bell to recover

Unlike Chipotle’s prolonged crisis, analysts say Taco Bell’s challenges could prove shorter-lived if no additional illnesses emerge. The company has already stopped using the implicated lettuce supplier nationwide and removed potentially affected ingredients from restaurants while investigators continue tracing the outbreak. 

Restaurant analysts note that consumers often have relatively short memories when outbreaks are quickly contained. While the nearly 30% decline in visits represents a meaningful short-term setback, Taco Bell’s response over the coming weeks—including transparent communication and continued food safety measures—will likely determine how quickly customers return.
