Illinois has emerged as one of the states most affected by Wendy’s nationwide downsizing, with the fast-food giant quietly reducing its footprint as it works to improve profitability.
The burger chain has announced plans to close hundreds of underperforming restaurants across the U.S. during the first half of 2026, and Illinois has experienced one of the largest net declines in locations among all states.
Illinois among the hardest-hit states
Recent analyses of Wendy’s restaurant count show Illinois has lost a net 18 locations since late 2025, ranking third behind only Florida and Texas for the largest reduction in restaurants. The state now has about 175 Wendy’s locations remaining, reflecting the company’s effort to streamline its portfolio by closing weaker-performing stores.
While Wendy’s has not released a complete list of every affected restaurant, local reports have linked several closures to communities in the Chicago and Rockford areas.
Why Wendy’s is closing restaurants
The closures are part of Wendy’s broader turnaround strategy following weaker sales and declining customer traffic. During its latest earnings report, the company said it expects to shutter between 298 and 358 underperforming U.S. restaurants during the first half of 2026 after already closing 28 locations at the end of 2025.
Company executives have emphasized that many of the restaurants targeted for closure are older locations that no longer meet financial expectations. At the same time, Wendy’s plans to continue investing in remodeled restaurants, menu innovation and new openings in stronger markets.
Although Illinois has seen one of the nation’s biggest reductions, Wendy’s continues to maintain a significant presence throughout the state. For customers, however, the closures are a reminder that even some of the country’s best-known fast-food chains are reevaluating where they do business as they adapt to changing consumer demand and a challenging operating environment.
