Taco Bell has already sparked plenty of debate over its menu prices, but a new Reddit discussion is about a very different surprise: a dessert that may have reached one customer before its official launch.
In an October 7 Reddit post, a customer said they ordered a caramel apple empanada and received a pastry with a white filling instead. There was no noticeable apple or caramel flavor. “It kind of just tasted like straight sugar,” the customer wrote, adding that the mystery item didn’t resemble anything on the menu.

Reddit users think they solved the mystery
The most popular reply identified the pastry as a Birthday Cake Empanada that was not supposed to be available yet. That commenter was unimpressed with the flavor, describing the filling as overly sweet. The original poster responded that it reminded them of the cream in a McDonald’s pumpkin pie.
The identification hasn’t been independently confirmed from the customer’s order. Still, the timing is striking. On October 8, Taco Bell officially announced its new Milk Bar Birthday Cake Empanada, scheduled to arrive nationwide on October 15 at participating restaurants.
The limited-time dessert has a cake batter-flavored filling, pink frosting and rainbow sprinkles, with an advertised price of $3.49. Those details are consistent with the Reddit speculation, although the company has not said whether this particular customer received the unreleased item or how an early sale might have happened.
Not everyone is ready to write it off
Some Reddit reactions were harsh. But another commenter said they had been looking forward to trying the dessert and were disappointed to hear a negative early review. That enthusiasm makes sense: the birthday-cake flavor already has fans, and a single unexpected order is hardly a representative taste test.
There’s also an important detail in the original complaint. The customer wanted caramel and apple, not birthday cake. Even a well-made cake-flavored pastry could be a letdown when you’re expecting something fruity. That makes this a story about a possible order mix-up as much as a story about taste.
Taco Bell and Milk Bar have worked together before. Their Strawberry Bell Truffles arrived in 2022, followed by Birthday Cake Churros in 2025. Those churros inspired mixed Reddit reviews, with some customers praising the sweet filling and others finding it too sugary. The new empanada may prove just as divisive once more people can actually try it.
When can everyone else try it?
The official nationwide start date is October 15, with availability limited to participating locations and supplies. Taco Bell also says eligible Rewards members celebrating a birthday can choose the empanada or a regular Baja Blast Freeze as a birthday reward during the October 15–28 promotion, subject to the app’s terms.
For now, the Reddit post offers an intriguing preview, not a final verdict. The real test begins when customers can order the new dessert on purpose.
