Texas has more Sonic Drive-In restaurants than any other state, but Oklahoma is the surprise winner when you adjust for population. That makes for a revealing contrast as Sonic customers debate the chainโs food and service.
An October 8, 2026, count from StoreLocationDataโs Sonic location report shows 3,357 restaurants listed in 47 states. Texas has an overwhelming lead in total locations, yet smaller states dominate when those numbers are compared with population.

The 10 states with the most Sonic restaurants
- Texas โ 895 locations
- Oklahoma โ 257 locations
- Tennessee โ 219 locations
- Arkansas โ 190 locations
- Missouri โ 183 locations
- Louisiana โ 158 locations
- Kansas โ 131 locations
- Mississippi โ 120 locations
- Alabama โ 95 locations
- Florida โ 88 locations
Texasโs 895 Sonic locations are more than three times Oklahomaโs 257. Tennessee takes third with 219, followed by Arkansas and Missouri. More surprising is who barely makes the list: Florida places tenth with 88, while California, the countryโs most populous state, has only 80 and finishes outside the top ten.
In fact, Arkansas has 190 Sonics despite having fewer than one-tenth as many residents as California. That gap is a reminder that Sonicโs footprint is especially strong across parts of the South and the central United States, rather than evenly spread around the country.
The 10 states with the most Sonic restaurants per capita
For a fairer comparison between large and small states, divide each stateโs location count by its July 1, 2025 population estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau. The result is the number of Sonic restaurants per 100,000 residents.
- Oklahoma โ 257 locations; 6.23 per 100,000 residents
- Arkansas โ 190 locations; 6.10 per 100,000 residents
- Kansas โ 131 locations; 4.40 per 100,000 residents
- Mississippi โ 120 locations; 4.06 per 100,000 residents
- Louisiana โ 158 locations; 3.42 per 100,000 residents
- New Mexico โ 69 locations; 3.25 per 100,000 residents
- Tennessee โ 219 locations; 2.99 per 100,000 residents
- Missouri โ 183 locations; 2.92 per 100,000 residents
- Texas โ 895 locations; 2.82 per 100,000 residents
- Alabama โ 95 locations; 1.83 per 100,000 residents
Oklahomaโs 257 restaurants produce 6.23 Sonics per 100,000 residents, the highest rate in the country. Arkansas is barely behind at 6.10, even with 67 fewer locations. Kansas climbs from seventh in total stores to third per capita, at 4.40.
New Mexico is an especially unexpected entry. Its 69 restaurants leave it outside the overall top ten, but its smaller population lifts it to sixth per capita, ahead of Tennessee, Missouri and Texas. Texas, despite leading the raw count by hundreds of restaurants, falls to ninth with 2.82 per 100,000 residents.
Florida tells the opposite story: it squeaks into the total-location top ten but has only about 0.38 Sonics per 100,000 residents. And three statesโMaine, New Hampshire and Vermontโhave no Sonic locations listed in the October snapshot.
The rankings measure restaurant availability relative to population, not sales or how often residents visit. Still, they reveal a clear geographic divide: a Sonic can be a familiar neighborhood fixture in Oklahoma or Arkansas while remaining relatively uncommon in many large states.
