California has more Starbucks locations than any other state by a wide margin, but Nevada comes out on top when the number of stores is adjusted for population. Even amid discussion of Starbucksโ recent store closures, the coffee chainโs footprint remains unusually concentrated in a handful of Western states.
A July 2026 state-level location snapshot puts California far ahead of Texas and Florida by total stores. The ranking is very different per resident, with Nevada, Washington and Colorado leading the field. Population makes the difference.

The 10 states with the most Starbucks locations
- California โ 3,045 locations
- Texas โ 1,483 locations
- Florida โ 925 locations
- New York โ 721 locations
- Illinois โ 709 locations
- Washington โ 650 locations
- Arizona โ 595 locations
- Ohio โ 522 locations
- North Carolina โ 514 locations
- Virginia โ 502 locations
Californiaโs 3,045 Starbucks locations are more than double Texasโs 1,483. Florida follows with 925, and New York edges Illinois for fourth place. The other surprise is Washington: it has 650 locations and sixth place overall, despite a far smaller population than many states below it. Arizona also reaches seventh with 595 stores.
The 10 states with the most Starbucks locations per capita
These figures measure locations per 100,000 people, using the U.S. Census Bureauโs July 1, 2025 state population estimates. The unrounded rates determine the order; figures shown here are rounded to two decimal places.
- Nevada โ 311 locations; 9.48 per 100,000 residents
- Washington โ 650 locations; 8.12 per 100,000 residents
- Colorado โ 486 locations; 8.08 per 100,000 residents
- Arizona โ 595 locations; 7.80 per 100,000 residents
- California โ 3,045 locations; 7.74 per 100,000 residents
- Oregon โ 316 locations; 7.39 per 100,000 residents
- Hawaii โ 83 locations; 5.79 per 100,000 residents
- Virginia โ 502 locations; 5.65 per 100,000 residents
- Illinois โ 709 locations; 5.57 per 100,000 residents
- New Mexico โ 111 locations; 5.22 per 100,000 residents
Nevadaโs 311 locations translate to about 9.48 Starbucks shops per 100,000 people, making it the per-capita leader. Washington comes next at 8.12, with Colorado close behind at 8.08. California still ranks fifth per capita, a notable feat for a state so large. By this measurement Starbucks is strongly concentrated in the West, not just distributed according to population.
Hawaii makes the per-capita list with a modest 83 Starbucks locations, a striking contrast with Californiaโs thousands. New Mexico also slips into tenth place with only 111. Texas and Florida, second and third in the raw-count rankings, disappear once adjusted for population. Washington and Arizona appear in both lists, while Illinois and Virginia make both top tens as well.
StoresInfo counted 16,737 Starbucks locations across the 50 states and Washington, D.C., in its July 2026 snapshot. Numbers can shift as cafes open, close or change format; this ranking describes the recorded store distribution at that point, not today’s verified open-store count.
Location counts come from StoresInfoโs state-by-state Starbucks data, dated July 2026. Different restaurant-location directories sometimes report different totals because their collection dates and inclusion rules differ. Both lists above consistently use this single dataset.
