If you’re anything like me, you always want to find ways to save time while cooking and making meals.
There always seems to be more to do no matter what, especially when kids are involved!
That’s why I’m always on the lookout for kitchen hacks that can save time, effort, and perhaps most importantly – cut down on the number of dishes I have to do at the end of the night!
The most important practice for speeding up your kitchen
I’m not calling this a “hack” because (A) it doesn’t require any real insight, and (B) it’s actually really simple:
Set out everything you’re going to need beforehand.
(Yes, you’ll still forget some things, and that’s ok. I do all the time!)
Just having everything arrayed around your cooking space means that you’ll have what you need right at hand, and especially if you measure out your spices beforehand (usually I just combine them in a ramekin if they’re all supposed to be added at the same time), you can save so much time and stress while you’re juggling the competing cooking timelines of multiple dishes.
Getting consistency in the kitchen
I also recommend homemaking some of your ingredients – vanilla extract and baking powder are both gimmies, because they’re easy and you’ll use them all the time, but you can also do more in-depth stuff like coconut oil and coconut milk.
The reason for that is really simple – when you make some of the most active ingredients yourself, you’ll get familiar with how they consistently behave in your kitchen, which means you’ll get to know those competing timelines of various dishes even better…
AND you’ll be able to adjust the recipes to your tastes. If you know that your homemade coconut milk is a little less fatty than store-bought canned coconut milk (which is usually the case), you can add a little extra to many recipes to get more of that wholesome flavor without unbalancing the recipe (and if you’re calorie counting, hey, all the better!).
