West Virginia has more Taco Bell restaurants per resident than any other state in a September 2026 location analysis. California still has the most restaurants overall, but its lead vanishes when the numbers are adjusted for population. Itโs one of several surprises in the chainโs national footprint.
The contrast is striking alongside Vermontโs unusually limited national-chain restaurant scene. Vermont has just five Taco Bell locations in the same dataset, fewer than any other state, while West Virginia has 76โenough to put it first on a per-person basis.

Research firm SphereScout identified 8,334 Taco Bell locations across the 50 states and Washington, D.C., using records extracted September 8, 2026. Its totals include 42 temporarily closed restaurants, so these figures describe locations in the snapshotโnot a guarantee that every restaurant was serving customers that day.
The 10 states with the most Taco Bell restaurants overall
When you simply count restaurants, the biggest states naturally dominate. Still, a few rankings may surprise readers who expect the countryโs most populous states to fill every spot.
- California โ 891 locations
- Texas โ 749
- Florida โ 489
- Ohio โ 432
- Michigan โ 365
- Illinois โ 306
- New York โ 285
- Georgia โ 281
- North Carolina โ 279
- Indiana โ 276
Ohio jumps into fourth place, far ahead of New York despite New York having considerably more residents. Michigan ranks fifth. Indiana is another standout: its 276 Taco Bells edge Tennesseeโs 271, putting Indiana in the top ten despite its much smaller population than several states it outranks.
The 10 states with the most Taco Bell restaurants per capita
For this list, each stateโs restaurant count is divided by its July 2025 U.S. Census Bureau population estimate and multiplied by 100,000. This puts smaller and larger states on more equal footing. The rates below are restaurants per 100,000 residents, rounded to two decimal places.
- West Virginia โ 76 locations; 4.30 per 100,000 residents
- Arkansas โ 128; 4.11
- Indiana โ 276; 3.96
- Missouri โ 243; 3.88
- Kentucky โ 175; 3.80
- Tennessee โ 271; 3.70
- Ohio โ 432; 3.63
- Michigan โ 365; 3.60
- Alabama โ 173; 3.33
- Kansas โ 99; 3.33
West Virginiaโs 76 restaurants might not sound like many until you consider its roughly 1.77 million residents. California, with 891 restaurants, has only 2.26 locations per 100,000 peopleโabout half West Virginiaโs rate.
Arkansas makes a dramatic leap from outside the top twenty by total locations to second place per capita. Indiana, Ohio and Michigan make both top-ten lists. Meanwhile, the raw-count leadersโCalifornia, Texas and Floridaโare all absent from the per-capita top ten.
The regional pattern is striking: every state in the population-adjusted top ten sits in the Midwest, South or Appalachia. Neither the West Coast nor the Northeast makes the list, even though California and New York are top-ten states by total restaurants.
These rankings measure listed restaurants relative to population, not how often residents eat Taco Bell or which state loves the brand most. They also explain why counting restaurants alone tells only part of the story.
