The Subway at 17408 Vashon Highway SW in Vashon, Washington, closed August 18, ending a six-year run on the island. The closure was reported by the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber, which described the restaurant as Vashon’s only chain restaurant.

The location’s official Subway page now lists the restaurant as closed, with no operating hours available. The page identifies all locations as independently owned and operated.

The restaurant had also been described by local tourism and dining websites as Vashon’s only fast-food restaurant, making its departure particularly notable for residents looking for a familiar national chain.

Rising costs proved difficult

According to the Beachcomber, owner Varun Dhir purchased the restaurant, but the business faced a series of challenges during its six years. The run included the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, rising operating costs, and increasing difficulty keeping the restaurant financially sustainable.

Those challenges have become increasingly familiar for independent franchise operators across the restaurant industry. Higher labor, food, rent, and other operating expenses can put pressure on locations that rely on steady customer traffic.
