Another food manufacturer is shutting down a production facility, adding to a growing number of layoffs across the food and beverage industry this year. The closure will eliminate more than 120 jobs and marks a major setback for Washington’s plant-based food manufacturing sector.
Stanwood facility to close in September
No Meat Factory USA has announced it will permanently close its manufacturing facility in Stanwood, Washington, resulting in the layoff of 123 employees. According to a WARN notice filed with the Washington State Employment Security Department, employee separations are expected to take effect in September 2026.
The company manufactures plant-based food products for retail and foodservice customers and has operated its Stanwood facility since taking over the site in 2023. No Meat Factory invested approximately $20 million to renovate the more than 200,000-square-foot facility after acquiring the former Twin City Foods plant.
More than 120 workers affected
According to the WARN filing, the layoffs will impact employees across a variety of positions, with production workers representing the largest group of affected employees. The company said workers will receive information about final pay, health insurance continuation, unemployment benefits, and workforce transition assistance.
No Meat Factory has not publicly explained why it is closing the Stanwood plant or whether production will be transferred to another facility. The company’s remaining manufacturing operation is located in Coldstream, British Columbia.
Plant-based food industry faces continued challenges
The closure comes as parts of the plant-based food industry continue to adjust to slower sales growth following years of rapid expansion. Manufacturers have faced increasing pressure from changing consumer demand, higher operating costs, and a more competitive marketplace.
For Stanwood, the loss of 123 manufacturing jobs represents one of the region’s largest recent food industry layoffs and highlights the ongoing challenges facing companies in the plant-based food sector.
